Easyjet cuts flights from East Midlands and Luton
Easyjet cuts flights from East Midlands and Luton
4th Sep 09
Despite claiming their resilience in the face of the economic downturn, 'low cost' airline easyJet announced the closure of all operations at East Midlands Airport and a 20% reduction in flights from London Luton.

This is bad news for the thousands who travel from East Midlands to Geneva and onwards to ski resorts. At the moment the airline operates 37 flights a week out of East Midlands to various European destinations and employs 120 staff.

The company is citing rises in air passenger duties as the main reason for pulling out of East Midlands.

It is hoped that BMI Baby, who also operates a non-daily scheduled flight to Geneva in the winter, will pick up some of the slots left by easyJet.

Yesterday passengers were assured that all flights including those over Christmas and New Year would not be affected and the base is expected to close early in the New Year.

As for the cuts at London Luton, one of easyJet's biggest UK bases flying 4.7 million passengers a year, it is not yet known exactly which flights will be cut. Once again, the company blames the airport owner's landing charges which have apparently increased 25% in three years and says the will be using the planes to fly out of 'more profitable European bases'.

There are still a number of ski operators offering packages from regional airports and these are always worth considering and looking at as they can represent very good value for money (as they include flights, transfers and the accommodation).
